The watch year: fairs, release cycles and the dates worth diarising

The watch industry does not release new models evenly through the year. It follows a calendar, and knowing that calendar is useful: it tells you when prices tend to move, when the previous generation starts appearing in the pre-owned market, and when to time a purchase or a sale.
The main fairs
- Watches and Wonders Geneva — the biggest week of the year for new releases. The 2026 edition ran from 14 to 20 April. The 2027 edition runs from 5 to 11 April at Palexpo: on 18 September 2026 the organisers confirmed a line-up of 75 exhibitors, including 13 new brands — Akhor, Alain Silberstein, Berneron, Breva Genève, Fortis, Kerbedanz, Porsche Design, Singer Reimagined and Stollenwurm, joining Breitling, Damiani, Gallet and Universal Genève, whose participation was announced in June 2026. A new scenography inspired by Switzerland’s lakes and mountains will be introduced, and the public ‘In The City’ programme will run for the full seven days.
- LVMH Watch Week — the first major event of the calendar, usually late January and often hosted by a single city. Milan hosted the seventh edition from 19 to 21 January 2026, with nine maisons taking part, including the group’s watch brands.
- Geneva Watch Days — a decentralised, city-wide event in early September. The 2026 edition ran from 2 to 6 September and involved 71 brands across several venues in Geneva.
How the big brands time their releases
Rolex concentrates its main novelties around Watches and Wonders in April — its stand is the centre of the week for most visitors — but it has also made standalone announcements at other points in the year. The new Perpetual Padellone, its first modern complete-calendar moonphase series watch, was announced separately on 15 September 2026 rather than at a fair.
Patek Philippe follows a similar pattern: novelties at Watches and Wonders, with further references added later in the year. 2026 is also the fiftieth anniversary of the Nautilus, which launched in 1976, so attention on steel sports Pateks has been unusually high.
Tudor, Omega, Cartier and the other large houses are broadly Watches and Wonders-first, then they add limited editions through the year. The pattern matters because limited editions in the low thousands usually sell through at retail and surface on the secondary market within weeks.
What it means if you are buying or selling
Release season moves the pre-owned market in both directions. New references put pressure on the prices of the models they replace, while anniversary years and well-received launches firm up demand for the classics. A month either side of a major fair is usually the most active period for both supply and prices.
If you are thinking of selling, the practical move is to know your watch’s value before the market moves rather than after. Our valuations are free and take minutes.
