Panerai puts the Luminor into a 42 mm case for the first time
Panerai has done something it has not done in the Luminor's civilian life: it has put the collection into a 42 mm case, with three new references reported on 22 September 2026.
A smaller Luminor, thirty years on
The Luminor became a public watch in 1993. Panerai supplied the Italian Navy for decades before that, and the brand opened to civilians on 10 September 1993 with a short collection that included the Luminor ref. 5218-201/A, a 44 mm watch that set the template for everything since. The new references revisit that design and reduce it. The case now measures 42 mm across and 13.8 mm thick, against 44 mm for the core Luminor Marina models, while the silhouette keeps the sharp lines and the solid lugs of the 1990s original.
Three versions have been announced. The PAM01710 has a brushed and polished steel case, a matte black dial and a beige canvas strap. The PAM01711 pairs a green dial with a matching green canvas strap. The PAM01714 combines a matte blue dial with a matte black DLC-coated steel case. All three retain the details that define the Luminor: the crown-protecting bridge on the right of the case, a domed sapphire crystal, a solid screwed case back, and water resistance to 500 metres. The dial is a single plate with printed numerals and indexes in ecru, the small seconds sits at 9 o'clock, and the hands and markers are coated in Super-LumiNova. The single-plate dial echoes the look of Panerai's two-layer ‘sandwich’ dials without using that more complex construction, and the running seconds subdial is a nod to the naval originals, whose wearers used it to check at a glance that the watch was still running.
Calibre P.980
Powering the three watches is Panerai's Calibre P.980, an automatic movement built on a ValFleurier base. It runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour, uses 177 components, and offers a power reserve of about 72 hours from a single barrel. It also has a hacking seconds function, so the running seconds hand stops when the crown is pulled out, and Panerai says each movement is regulated in six positions. The movement sits behind a solid case back, in keeping with the tool-watch brief. Each reference is supplied on a canvas strap with tone-on-tone stitching and leather reinforcement around the holes, tapering from 22 mm to 20 mm and fastened with a trapezoidal pin buckle finished to match the case.
Prices and what it means if you are buying or selling
Panerai has placed the new references in the middle of its range. European pricing was quoted at €6,500 for the two steel models, the PAM01710 and the PAM01711, and €7,500 for the black DLC PAM01714; United States pricing was given as $6,700 and $7,700 respectively. UK retail prices had not been published in the coverage at the time of writing. All three are part of the permanent collection rather than limited editions, which matters for the second-hand market: permanent references stay in production and reach the pre-owned market steadily, rather than in a single wave of flips after launch.
For the pre-owned market, the significance of this launch is mostly about size. The Luminor's 44 mm and 47 mm cases have long been the reason some buyers admire the brand without ever wearing it, and a 42 mm option widens the pool of people who can wear the watch comfortably. If you already own a larger Luminor, this does not change its value by itself — the reference, the condition and the completeness of your specific watch still determine what it is worth. But a mainstream shift towards more wearable sizes reinforces what the pre-owned market already shows: demand is broadest for the watches that suit the widest range of wrists. A valuation against current conditions, rather than against a launch, remains the sensible way to decide whether to buy or to sell.
